Course Description:
This course discusses the scope of the needlestick injury problem in healthcare, risk factors for needlestick injury, discussion and transmission risk of the three most common bloodborne pathogens, the monetary and psychological cost of needlestick injury, post-exposure management and prophylaxis against bloodborne pathogens, as well as prevention strategies for needlestick injuries.
Outcomes:
≥ 92% of participants will know the risk of needlestick injury, its consequences, including transmission of bloodborne pathogens, and how to prevent needlestick injuries.
Objectives:
After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:
- Define needlestick injury.
- List three risk factors for needlestick injury.
- Identify three bloodborne pathogens that are associated with contaminated needlestick injury.
- Outline the hepatitis B virus (HBV) pre- and post-exposure recommendations.
- Summarize three needlestick prevention strategies.
