Course Description:
This course discusses the prevalence and diagnostic criteria of adult obesity, its complex pathophysiology, and obesity-related conditions. This course also discusses comprehensive clinical assessment findings in those with obesity. Evidence-based obesity interventions, including nutrition counseling, physical activity recommendations, pharmacological treatment, and surgical/procedural interventions, are also discussed in detail. Weight bias and stigma, and their effects on nursing care, are also discussed.
Outcomes:
≥ 92% of participants will know the comprehensive evaluation and management of adults living with obesity.
Objectives:
After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:
- Relate the incidence and prevalence of obesity in the adult population.
- Differentiate between the terms overweight and obese.
- Explain the pathophysiology of obesity.
- Examine obesity-related conditions and complications.
- Elaborate on a comprehensive assessment of an adult with obesity.
- Summarize evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of obesity.
- Recognize weight stigma in practice and how to promote stigma-free care.
