This course discusses the definitions of terms associated with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), the risk factors that increase a woman’s chance of PMADs, the impact that undiagnosed and untreated PMADs have on children, the signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of postpartum depression and anxiety, a thorough differentiation of postpartum obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) versus postpartum psychosis, and our role as nurses in the care of postpartum mothers with PMADs.

Outcomes:

≥ 92% of participants will know how to recognize postpartum depression and anxiety.

Objectives:

After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define terminology related to the perinatal period.
  2. Identify the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety.
  3. Determine the screening tools that can be utilized for identifying potential postpartum depression and anxiety.
  4. Outline the recommended treatment options for postpartum depression and anxiety.
  5. Differentiate postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from postpartum psychosis.
  6. Explain the nurse’s role in caring for postpartum mothers with or at risk for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs).
