Course Description:

This course discusses the root cause of sentinel events and how communication affects patient outcomes, as well as communication techniques, SBAR technique, and the use of CUS words. This course also discusses the use of TeamSTEPPS, secure chat and the EHR, bedside rounding, and how to handle issues.

Outcomes:

≥ 92% of participants will know how to use evidence-based research to improve nurse-to-physician communication.

Objectives:

After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the root causes of sentinel events.
  2. Explain how healthcare professionals’ communication affects patient outcomes.
  3. List two communication techniques used to enhance nurse-physician communication.
  4. Define SBAR to be used in the clinical setting.
  5. Define CUS to be used in the clinical setting.
