Course Description:
This course discusses the use of ketamine, a drug classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a Schedule III drug with moderate abuse potential, as a viable treatment option for treatment-resistant depression, as well as the legal and ethical challenges that come with using controlled substances.
Outcomes
≥ 92% of participants will know about the use of ketamine to treat treatment-resistant depression.
Objectives
After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to meet the following objectives:
- Recognize the defining features of treatment-resistant depression as per the DSM-5.
- Identify two exclusionary criteria for ketamine treatment in patients who have treatment-resistant depression.
- Determine the side effects of ketamine to monitor for after administration.
- Identify two symptoms of “K-hole’ a patient may experience after ketamine administration.
- Summarize ethical considerations with the use of ketamine.
