Course Description:
This course discusses central and arterial lines. Indications for use and the purpose of each are reviewed. Different types of central venous access devices are discussed. The insertion of catheters, as well as insertion and post-insertion complications, are summarized. The removal of each catheter is outlined. Nursing care for both central and arterial lines is reviewed.
Outcomes:
≥ 92% of participants will know how to care for a central or arterial line properly.
Objectives:
After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:
- Characterize indications for the use of a central venous line.
- Identify medications that are vesicants.
- Summarize pre-insertion and post-insertion complications of central venous lines.
- Describe indications for using an arterial catheter.
- Outline complications associated with arterial catheters.
- Specify aspects of nursing care for a patient with a central venous or arterial line.
