This course discusses the definitions of terms associated with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), the risk factors that increase a woman’s chance of PMADs, the impact that undiagnosed and untreated PMADs have on children, the signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of postpartum depression and anxiety, a thorough differentiation of postpartum obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) versus postpartum psychosis, and our role as nurses in the care of postpartum mothers with PMADs.
Outcomes:
≥ 92% of participants will know how to recognize postpartum depression and anxiety.
Objectives:
After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:
- Define terminology related to the perinatal period.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety.
- Determine the screening tools that can be utilized for identifying potential postpartum depression and anxiety.
- Outline the recommended treatment options for postpartum depression and anxiety.
- Differentiate postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from postpartum psychosis.
- Explain the nurse’s role in caring for postpartum mothers with or at risk for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs).
