Course Description:
This course discusses routine venipuncture, maintenance, and IV insertions in adults and pediatric patients. The anatomy of the heart and the purpose of the skin is reviewed. Common blood tests, including the type and color of the tube they are retrieved in, are examined. The insertion process is discussed, including assessing, maintaining, and removing IV catheters.

Objectives:
After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to meet the following objectives:
- Examine the structure of the vascular system.
- Compare the types of blood tests that can be performed with venipuncture.
- Determine how to insert an intravenous (IV) catheter correctly.
- Calculate flow rates correctly.
- Outline maintenance of an IV catheter.
- Summarize the assessment of an IV catheter.
- Identify complications of venipuncture and IV therapy.
- Evaluate venipuncture procedures in children.
