Course Description:
This course discusses the pathophysiology and management of respiratory complications following spinal cord injury.
Outcomes:
≥ 92% of participants will know how and why respiratory complications occur after a spinal cord injury and how these complications are mitigated.
Objectives:
After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the location of and the muscles used in inspiration and expiration.
- Describe the mechanics of respiration.
- Explain the American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) used to classify the degree of impairment in SCI.
- Describe the respiratory complications specific to mechanically ventilated SCI patients.
- Determine the proper assessment of pulmonary function following SCI.
- Explain the interventions that can be used in the management of compromised pulmonary function following SCI to optimize the patient’s quality of life.
- Determine the preferred method for weaning a SCI patient from mechanical ventilation.
- Identify the advantages of a tracheostomy.
