Course Description:

This course discusses the different types of medical errors and the potentially harmful and non-harmful events that can result from a medical error. This course also reviews the risk factors for medical errors, reporting mechanisms, and analyses of medical errors and their potential impacts on healthcare providers. Lastly, it summarizes many prevention strategies at the individual and organizational levels for specific types of medical errors.

Outcomes

≥92% of participants will know the types of medical errors, risk factors for medical errors, and strategies for prevention.

Objectives

After completing this continuing education course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the different types of medical errors.
  2. Describe the different types of adverse events.
  3. Identify at least three risk factors for medical errors.
  4. Summarize at least two organizational-level medical error prevention strategies.
  5. Evaluate at least two medical error prevention strategies at the individual level.
  6. Summarize at least three strategies to prevent medication errors.
