Athletic Trainers who are BOC Certified:
  • Report and be able to furnish documentation of having completed a BOC-approved Emergency Cardiac Care Course during the current renewal year of December 1 through November 30. Detailed guidelines are provided.
  • Report and be able to furnish proof of current BOC certification in the form of a copy of the current BOC Certification Card or printout of BOC on-line verification. BOC certification shall be considered acceptable documentation that BOC-certified licensees are in compliance with the BOC’s continuing education requirements for ongoing credentialing. 
Athletic Trainers who are NOT BOC Certified due to Statutory Exemption
  • The licensed athletic trainers who were issued a license pursuant to Code of Ala 1975, Section 34-40-7, exempting them from BOC certification are required to report twenty-six (26) contact hours of continuing education annually, with seven (7) of those hours being in an approved emergency cardiac care course.   Detailed continuing education guidelines and emergency cardiac care guidelines are provided. Documentation must also be submitted on the forms furnished by the Board showing proof of completion of all twenty-six (26) hours.

An  applicant for renewal of an athletic trainer license must:
  • complete the renewal application on a form provided by the department;
  • pay the license renewal fee established  in 12 AAC 02.395; and
  • provide proof of the applicant's certification as an athletic trainer as required in AS 08.07.020, sent directly to the department from
    • the Board of Certification, Inc.; or
    • another nationally-recognized professional association approved by the department.

R4-49-208.D., "All licensees shall complete a course approved by the Board on the athletic training statutes and this Chapter within one year of obtaining an original license or license renewal."  The actual "course" is the Board's statutes and rules.  Licensees are required to read these documents (available here) and complete the statutes and rules exam before their first license renewal.

  • Athletic trainers are not currently required to be licensed in the state of California.
  • As of 9/29/2024, AB 796 was enacted, which is a title protection bill, requiring anyone using the title of Athletic Trainer, Certified Athletic Trainer, Licensed Athletic Trainer, Registered Athletic Trainer, AT, ATC, LAT, CAT to both be:
    • A graduate from a CAATE Accredited Athletic Program or eligibility for BOC certification AND
    • Is certified by the BOC

An applicant for renewal of an athletic trainer license must:
  • Maintain a current official letter of Athletic Trainer certificate from BOC
  • Maintain proof of current CPR certification from a certified provider which includes a live lab component. The CPR course will count for 0.1 CEU. (0.1 CEU = 1 Contact Hour)
  • Required hours shall include 0.2 units (2 hours) of Ethics
  • Each course must include topics relevant to the field of health care as it pertains to Athletic Training.

  • Athletic Trainers shall be required to complete 24 hours of continuing education in courses approved by the Board, as outlined above. The continuing education requirement includes up to three (3) hours towards current certification in both cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator at the professional rescue level (e.g. Basic Life Support or higher certification) from the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, American Safety and Health Institute, the National Safety Council, or an entity approved by the Board as equivalent.
If Licensed After January 1, 1998:
  • An applicant or licensee certified by the Board of Certification (BOC) or its successor during the biennium can demonstrate compliance with the continuing education requirements by:
    • Entering their BOC certification number and submitting a copy of their active certification card in the CE Broker tracking system.
    • Submitting proof of completion of:
      • The prevention of medical errors course.
      • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator at the professional rescue level.

  • CEU hours shall be directly and primarily related to the clinical application of occupational therapy.
  • Any health practitioner working with children and/or dependent adults is a mandatory reporter. It is important to note that "working with" does not always mean “hands on care." This may mean observation or treatment of a child or dependent adult. Professionals providing care to dependent adults or children in Iowa must take a mandatory reporter course.

CEUfast is unable to provide this course for Iowa-mandated reporters. 
Effective July 1, 2019, Iowa HHS is responsible for developing and providing all training for mandatory reporters in Iowa, which can be located thru your "Workday Account". This training counts as two (2) contact hours for continuing education. Certificates earned after July 1, 2019 are valid for three (3) years.

Certificates of completion for both mandatory reporter trainings are required for the following situations:
  • Employment in a licensed position

An applicant for license renewal shall satisfy all of the following
requirements: 
  •  Currently holds, and at all times during the previous licensure period, certification in all of the following: 
    • Emergency cardiac care
    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
    • First aid
  • 75 hours of continuing education in the 3 years preceding the application for renewal. 
  • BOC certification is not a requirement for license renewal, but may be used toward the 75 CE hours required.

Special Requirements

  • Pain Management:
    • Minimum of three (3) hours of continuing education earned in the area of pain and symptom management.
  • Human Trafficking:
    • Beginning in 2019, and all renewals thereafter, licensees seeking renewal must have completed training in identifying victims of human trafficking that meets the standards in Administrative Rule 338.1303 prior to renewing their license. The training must only be completed one time. 
  • Implicit Bias Training:
    • For initial renewals completed after June 1, 2021, completion of one hour of implicit bias training is required for each year of licensure since June 1, 2021. If renewing prior to June 1, 2022, implicit bias training is not required for that renewal. Once the initial renewal is completed, then 1 hour of implicit bias training will be required for each year of the current license cycle going forward. Please note, this is not a one-time training and must be completed for each renewal cycle prior to the renewal being completed.
  • Accept Renewal Attestation:
    • By accepting the renewal attestation you as the licensee are certifying that you have met the emergency cardiac care training and the continuing education requirements during the 3- year period immediately preceding the application for renewal.
  • Emergency Cardiac Care Training Requirement
    • Within the 3-year renewal cycle, have completed emergency cardiac care training from a program that satisfies the requirements of R 338.1355 and hold an unexpired emergency cardiac care certification
A licensee may not accumulate more than twelve (12) credit hours of continuing education during one (1) twenty-four (24) hour period.
